Is fantasy better than reality?

Posted June 1st, 2008 by Sarah Cherim

I ruin things sometimes by asking too many questions. For example, what is the point of watching television or movies? I just don’t see the appeal of watching uncommonly good looking people live ideal, but completely unrealistic, lives. It simply does not make sense to me. I watch movies mostly because of the pyscology; I study the characters. I supose however that most people watch movies because stories are better than reality. The perfectly thrilling lives of uncommonly good looking people gives people hope that their lives may be just as wonderful. That conclusion brings me to my next point. Knowing why people pay to watch the lives of others, why would anyone write a script with an unhappy ending, what in the world is the point? Obviously, there are movies which are based off of reality, movies that inform and whatnot. understandably, they may have a happy ending. Maybe this makes sense to others, but to be completely honest, I’d rather not watch it if I know it won’t end well. All that does is break my spirit and often times I wind up angry. This is probably the reason I like sports movies, no one makes a movie about a losing sports team. They take heroes and underdogs and focus on their triumphs. Love stories where the star-crossed lovers don’t end up together? The underdogs lost the championship? No way, not my kind of movie. I believe in happy endings and I believe in hope.
